DE Guidelines for Spring 09 (SLO):
Define Ohlone College's DE's guidelines to improve online education and build e-campus
Goals to achieve the guideline (PIO):
A. Modify the curricuNet section on DE request:
- Replace most current online entries with "Describe the qualifications of the instructor(s) teaching this class
- Change the curricunet online entries often, between 2 and 4 years, so that every time a course goes through review, all parties have to re-think their role in online education
B. Committee learns from online courses petitioners and share information:
Revised process for online classes petitions:
- cccconfer session – with DE members and petitioners
- Petitioner has 5-10 minutes to enumerate the online training/expertise the instructors teaching this course will have.
3. The committee members listen, learn, ask questions, and offer help if needed
4. Course will always be approved, but with recommendations if appropriate
NOTE: If the course petitioner has presented previously to the DE committee with convincing online methodologies, that faculty should not need to present again with subsequent online course requests.
C. Work with deans and departments:
Propose that deans:
- Work with their division faculty to set minimum qualifications for an instructor of an online class
- Discuss these qualifications with instructors who will potentially teach an online class.

Distance Learning
- A resource website will offer faculty more tools/assistance with various needs towards online teaching. Under consideration are guidelines similar to those used by Mt. San Jacinto College. (Beyond meeting the standard) [DL 1-3]
- Instructional materials and activities in hybrid and fully online classes will fully meet ADA accessibility requirements. [DL 6]
- The current Enterprise Resource System, Web Advisor, will directly interface with the Course Management System (WebCT). This would not only speed up the process of getting students into the course management system, but allow them earlier access to their class(es) and instructors. (Beyond meeting the standard) [DL 9]
- Student evaluation of faculty will be done using an online system for all courses to show more clearly if faculty members are using /have adequate technical skills. This will allow online students to participate more fully in the faculty evaluation process. (Beyond meeting the standard) [DL 13]
- A system of ongoing research on student retention in online classes will be in place. [DL 15-16]
Definitions of terms:
- Fully Online: A fully online class is entirely conducted on the web. Course delivery follows traditional classroom model (as opposed to 'self paced'), where the instructor/student interaction is now instead, fully managed via a course management system, in place of the classroom (face-2-face). Students are not required to come to either the Fremont or Newark campus.
- Hybrid: Hybrid courses combine off-campus and on-campus instruction. Hybrid students meet regularly on-campus and perform other work online or in other distant ed formats.
- Web-enhanced: A Web-enhanced course is scheduled as a traditional on-campus class, which utilizes the Internet to access a Course Management System, where additional course information can be found. Web-enhanced courses do not reduce face-to-face meetings and do not require going through the DE committee.
Important DE Activiy for Year 09-10:
TBA to Hybrid: A conversion from face-2-face TBA lab to lab managed fully online.
We expect:
1. aditional trainings for instructors, who are new to online education and
2. modification of around 100 CORs to include the new mode of instruction.
Use the following guides for modifying the COR for your course, being converted from TBA to Hybrid:

Please email jdegallier@ohlone.edu if in need of captioning.
Follow these guidelines and the process will move along more smoothly
